Peanut Butter Pennies

I feel a little like...bakerella! I searched online for a recipe to make some dog treats for Bruno. My goal is to make them tiny (he's not getting any smaller) and peanut butter flavored. I found this recipe for peanut butter dog biscuits and thought I'd try it. It only has four ingredients and I want to avoid sugar, because they make him very sick!

All you have to do is mix the four ingredients together, roll out the dough and then cut it into shapes. Since I want them tiny, I am using an apple corer as my cookie cutter.
  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 1/3 cup peanut butter, chunky or smooth
  • 1 1/4 cups hot water

Bake them at 350° F for 40 minutes. I only baked mine for 20 minutes due to their small size.

Bruno loves his peanut butter pennies!

Bruno Goes to Washington - the National Mall

Day Three in Maryland and not even the drizzle can keep Bruno from the White House!

Bruno was a celebrity in his own right...there were no other dogs around and lots of people were stopping to look at him and photograph him. One person even filmed some video! Hasn't anyone seen a Dalmatian before?

Outside the WWII Memorial...Lincoln Memorial...really, really, REALLY wanting to chase a squirrel!

The White House....can't get closer due to the preparations for the upcoming State Dinner.

Bruno Goes to Washington...day 2

On his second day in the Capitol, Bruno headed to the Navy base to see Cousins Steve and Helen, and their baby Wilson. Bruno also saw M-1, which is the he
licopter President Obama flies in when he goes from DC to Camp David. Lucky Dog!

After all of that excitement, it is time for a nap with Mom!

After nap time, Molly will be done teaching school, so it is back to her house this evening!

Bruno Goes to Washington

The weekend before Thanksgiving, Bruno headed out to Washington, DC to see his master, my sister Molly. He was lucky enough to ride in Sarah's new RAV 4. Mom headed along as well so they could surprise Molly with a visit. He has been to the groomer, smells nice and is even wearing his bow so he looks nice for Molly.

Driving from our home in Illinois to Silver Spring, Maryland took about 13 hours. (They had to take some more frequent breaks for the Bruno...and his eating and...um, potty business.)

Bruno did not get car sick at any time during the trip!

He stayed in a pet-friendly hotel, received a new mat, food bowls and more than one "goodie bag" from the hotel.

Here he is pictured as he rides up the elevator to the hotel room.

Sarah reports that he only barked twice, but that was because he heard another dog barking and some man was making a great deal of noise himself.

He did not sleep on the hotel bed...he slept in his "den."

He went to visit Molly on his first night.

New Ball

I recently went to B. Lime where I found a few treasures, including a new ball for the Brunster.  The ball is Huck and it has become a fast favorite.  Next time you are in Chambana, I highly recommend you stop by this great new store!

* PS - So far, Huck has lived up to his "toughness!"

Bug Bite

I have been bitten by the cleaning bug. Others may have delved into their own Spring Cleaning weeks ago, but following a shopping trip to Target, I couldn't stop myself. I was limiting myself to within the confines of my scrapbook area. Here is a before and after photo. Quite exciting!

The before picture...

Ahhh....much better!

Marking Your Territory

There is never a dull moment at the farm when you have an idiot dog around. Yes, I am talking about Bruno.

We had a visit from the Schwan's man, and although it was a substitute driver and someone whom Bruno has never met before, he was still elated when he heard the Schwan's truck pull up into our long driveway. Bruno ran outside, got his football, and waited excitedly for the man to emerge from the truck.

Our regular Schwan's man had to take the night off. Bruno dropped his ball and ran right over to the substitute driver and began sniffing his legs and walking circles around this guy. The man said that he had been around many dogs that evening. I could tell! And so could Bruno!

Just as I was ordering the ice cream, I see Bruno standing behind the Schwan's man, lifting his leg, and attempting to pee on him. I guess Bruno wanted to "mark" him as his own. How embarrassing! Luckily, Bruno had relieved himself in the yard just prior to our visit from the Schwan's man, so he didn't actually pee on his leg before I yelled at him to come over next to me. And this is the dog that has been to THREE training classes?!?! Nice manners, Brunster.

The Maniac

Meet Bruno.

Bruno was residing in the West Wind with me. He is slowly migrating to the back porch. He is currently halfway there, as his "den" is now in the living room. Next stop: the porch. It is enclosed, and it will be heated. He isn't allowed to be outdoors because Dad is afraid the coyote's will get him. (Yeah...and they would probably win too because Bruno is kind of an idiot.) Here are some more facts about stinky:

He is about four years old.

A full-grown Dalmatian.

Very energetic.

Graduated from three classes in obedience and agility.

Likes to play B-A-L-L.

Fast friends with ANYONE who will throw the ball for him to chase after.

Chews anything that is plastic with great fervor!
Spoiled rotten.

Frequents parades, where he assists the Fire Chief (my Dad) greet the public.

Fairly friendly, yet protective.

Pretends to have a "hurt paw" when he wants attention. (Only Dad falls for this one!)

Likes to chase the "red light" (the laser light we shine around).

Tears open "his" mail.

Eats apples and peanut butter for snacks when he is a very good boy.

Loves to bury his ball in the snow.

Enjoys drinking water directly from the spout at the outdoor well.

Will spend hours chewing on a rawhide bone!

Sneaks up on the couch when Mom or Dad is not around.

Steals people food whenever he can.
(Including whole sticks of real butter, muffins - with the wrapper still on it -
my blueberry waffles, Krispy Kreme donuts and anything else he can get his paws on!)

Enjoys snooping around while I scrapbook.

Oh...and is a MANIAC! Observe the video of him playing with an old sheet he has confiscated from inside his den.

A Visit from the "Schwan's Man..."

Last night, while I was watching the "boob tube" and while Bruno was chewing on his bone, we had a visit from our Schwan's deliverer, Jerry. I have never realized the relationship between Bruno and Jerry before, but let me tell you, they are quite good friends.

As the Schwan's truck began driving up our driveway, (which is about a quarter-mile long), Bruno jumps up and runs over to the door, barking hysterically. Jerry and another Schwan's guy riding along in the truck, ring the doorbell as I am trying to grab onto Bruno so that I can push past him to go out into the porch, yet leave Bruno in the house. As Jerry sees me in the kitchen, he gives a little wave and opens up the screen door, then the back door and invites himself in.

Bruno is elated and instead of barking or running around like a maniac, or jumping on the guys, he is calm and sniffs at their feet a bit. Then he lets Jerry pet him. It was almost as if he went into a completely tranquill mode since he knew his buddy Jerry had arrived.

And how did Bruno react when Jerry went back out to the truck to get the food....well he cried and whined of course! He was happy again when Jerry returned to pet him and to offer him words of encouragement and love. Sickening! It seems that Jerry would often play B-A-L-L with Bruno during the summer months each time he came to our house. Bruno is fast friends with ANYONE who will throw his purple, chewed up, rubber football.
However, the story does not end there.
I too have a bit of a "past" with Jerry.

In early November 2007, during a rainy, Thursday evening, Bruno and I are home alone, and we get a visit from Schwanns. As I head outdoors, Bruno runs past me into the damp grass, runs around in his usual maniac fashion, and gets his ball. Jerry emerges from the truck and greets his favorite canine. I say hello to Jerry and we all head inside.
With the unseasonably warm weather, I am wearing flip flops. As I step into the breezeway, my foot slips (wet, no tracktion flip flops on a bare smooth, concrete floor) and I begin to fall over. "Whoooaaa," I say! Just as I get my other foot planted down and begin to stable myself, Bruno squeezes through the door and knocks out the small shreds of balance that I have.
I begin to go down.
I am falling to the left, where there is a heavy statue of a little boy, holding a metal, John Deere tractor toy. My feet are no longer underneath me and my arms are flailing about. As I continue to fall over, I feel Jerry's hand on my ass. He is mumbling something...is he praying...he is mentioning God...? Did he really think he was going to catch me?

Bruno, who has been staring at us while holding his ball in his mouth, waiting for one of us to play with him again, now decides to get a drink of water. After all, he realizes that he probably has a few moments before we all go inside.
Well, my left arm landed on that toy tractor, and finally I was able to regain controll of my footing. I ended up in a squatting position. Whew! I picked myself up and tried to casually walk inside the house. After the somewhat intimate contact with Jerry, whom I have never met before today, I felt obligated to make a large purchase.
Following a $50 order of frozen food, Jerry bids farewell to Bruno, and I hobble away to nurse my wounds.
How embarrassing.

Stuck at home...

Well, last night's ice storm has left us all stuck at home! The roads are so bad around our house, that my Dad decided we could not even make it to church today. (This gives you an idea of just how bad those roads are.) Luckily, we have not lost any power, so we still have heat, water, food, and of course, I can still scrapbook! Whew! Bruno is making it through this storm okay. He was careful to walk outside, avoiding his typical running out of the door like a maniac moves. (Mom and I were a little disappointed by this, as we were waiting to watch him slide around...hehehehe.) Ah...country living!
